The continued eruption of the La Soufriere volcano may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for some prisoners in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Several of them are expected to be pardoned for their crimes.
That promise is coming from St. Vincent’s Prime Minister and Minister Responsible for National Security, Dr. Ralph Gonzales, Minister of National Security.
According to Searchlight, the prime minister said persons with minor offenses, including unpaid fines, may be released earlier than usual, or get pardoned.
The prime minister said he has already requested a list of possible inmates for pardons from the head of the country’s prison service.
The Searchlight newspaper has quoted the PM as saying that currently there is no one imprisoned for a marijuana cigarette/spliff “as the fines given for this offense if it reaches court is “relatively small”, even before the decriminalisation.
