Jamaica: 15-year-old in police custody for killing 6-year-old cousin

Police said has called last Monday’s shooting death of a six-year-old boy at the hand of his 15-year-old cousin in Harmony Town, Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland as an accident.

Police said the teen, who was taken into to custody by the Freeport Police Station in Montego Bay, St James late Tuesday evening for questioning, according to investigations, accidentally shot six-year-old  Jadaine Miller while playing with an illegal firearm.

Reports indicate that the teen was accompanied by his mother and attorney Henry McCurdy when he was handed over to the lawmen.

The incident occurred about 2:30 p.m. Monday in a yard at Dalling Street, Harmony Town, Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland. The accused also lives in the same yard where other houses are located.

An earlier report by Caribbean Crime Watch indicated that the 15-year-old walked into the yard, shot the juvenile in the side, and walked away. Other reports have indicated that the deceased was among a group of children playing in the yard when the shooting occurred and the teen fled the scene.

Jadaine was pronounced dead at the Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital.
