Guyana: Robbery suspect shot dead by police after arrest

Police officials in Guyana are reporting that a robbery suspect was shot dead while allegedly reaching for a firearm while being escorted along with another suspect in a vehicle to the Providence Police Station, East Bank of Demerara (EBD) early on Sunday morning, May 16, 2021.

The dead man has been identified as 45-year-old Peter Headley of Dowding Street, Kitty.

According to a press release, the two suspects were intercepted in a vehicle by the lawmen at Nandy Park, EBD at around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday night, May 15 while acting on intelligence in relation to an armed house robbery that occurred at Herstelling on Tuesday night.

A television set believed to have been stolen during the Herstelling incident was discovered in the men’s vehicle during a search.

It was as a result of this discovery that the two men, including Headley, were arrested and were being escorted to the Providence Police Station.

The release further stated that Headley was placed in the front passenger seat of the same civilian vehicle, being driven by a police officer while other cops, including an armed officer, sat in the back seat with the other suspect.

The release did not reveal the total number of police officers in the vehicle at the time.

It is further alleged, according to the police report, that during the drive to the station, Headley was observed reaching under the front seat of the vehicle and pulled out what “appeared to be a firearm”. He was shot by one of the police officers as a result.

Headley succumbed to his injuries while being treated at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, EBD.

The police press release did not say whether or not a firearm was discovered.

The Police Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating the incident.
