Guyana: Man shot dead during robbery

Motorcycle bandits continue to wreak havoc on the Guyanese public.

Their latest crime: a robbery and murder on Camp Street, Georgetown which occurred on Friday afternoon, May 28, 2021.

The victim has been identified as Ronald Smith, 40, a resident of Wakapoa in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam). He was a maintenance and baggage handler for Trans Guyana Airways.

According to police in a press release, Smith was in the company of a gold miner who was driving him around Georgetown on Friday, conducting business.

Police said during these errands, Smith sold some gold for $437,000 cash, which he received in a haversack. He then went to visit his girlfriend.

Police further reported that after the visit, Smith and his girlfriend were standing in front of the Impeccable Beauty Salon when a motorcycle with two bandits pulled up to them.

One of them came off the motorcycle, shot Smith, and took the haversack with the cash. Both suspects escaped on the motorcycle in a northerly direction on Camp Street.

Smith died while undergoing treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Police said Smith’s gold miner driver was taken into custody for questioning.
