A 22-year-old man accused of stabbing his brother to death at Fairfield Village on the Essequibo Coast is now behind bars.
Rameshwar Gouveia made his first appearance in the Suddie Magistrate’s Court on May 14 where he was not required to plea to the indictable charge of murder.
According to the charge, on May 9, 2021, Gouveia inflicted a single stab wound on his brother, 32-year-old labourer, Ganga Persaud.
The incident occurred at Persaud’s home after an argument developed between his wife and another brother. The three brothers were reportedly drinking when the fight broke out.
During the drunken brawl, Gouveia armed himself with a rum bottle and inflicted wounds on Persaud before fleeing the scene.
According to media reports, Persaud’s mother handed him over to the police.
A post-mortem revealed that Persaud died from perforation to his lung and artery due to a single stab wound.
