Guyana: Businesswoman, security guard charged for fabricating robbery story

A businesswoman and a male security guard who claimed they were robbed of some GYD$500,000 last Sunday night in Port Kaituma by three males, one of whom spoke a language they did not understand, have been arrested after admitting to lying about the incident.

Following investigations and finding the details of their story not adding up, cops contacted the duo and then they admitted to making up the story.

Their excuse? The man claimed he lost the money given to him by another person to buy items.

They were subsequently arrested and remanded in custody pending further investigations.

EARLIER REPORT

Police officials are now hunting three “mixed males suspected to be foreigners” after a 51-year-old businesswoman was robbed of some GYD$500,000 on Sunday night in Orinoque, Port Kaituma, North West District.

Police said in a statement that the businesswoman and a 33-year-old security guard left home at about 8 p.m. Sunday and were heading to the waterfront area on foot.

Police said the duo were approached by the suspects in the vicinity of the Port Kaituma District Hospital.

The three suspects, all dressed in dark clothing, approached them from the opposite direction, police said.

It is further reported by the lawmen that one of the suspects took out a firearm and spoke in a language that the businesswoman and the security guard did not understand.

Police said he snatched the woman’s handbag containing the cash before escaping with his accomplices.
