Guyana: Boy’s head crushed by garbage truck

A nine-year-old boy was killed when a garbage truck ran over his head after he lost control of his bicycle in Sophia, Georgetown on Sunday, May 16, 2021, according to police reports.

The deceased has been identified as Enam Holder.

Police said the driver of the garbage truck, which was working on Church Street in Section ‘C’, Sophia, Georgetown, stopped near a small mud mound and exited the vehicle to assist his porter with the garbage collection.

Police further reported that the driver went back into the truck and started driving, while the victim, who was travelling in the same direction, attempted to ride past the truck when he rode onto the mud mound and lost control of his bicycle.

As a result, the police said the boy fell on the road and under the truck. It was at this time the truck’s right rear wheel ran over his head.

Emergency personnel pronounced the boy dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver was taken into police custody. He passed a breathalyzer test.

While investigations continue, officials are preparing to prosecute the case, according to reports.
